Funding to spur initial hiring, development for enterprise IT infrastructure startup
BOSTON – January 15, 2014 – ClearSky Data, an early-stage company building a breakthrough solution in enterprise infrastructure, today announced it has raised $12 million in series A funding round led by General Catalyst Partners and Highland Capital Partners. ClearSky Data will use the investment for its initial wave of hires in storage, networking, security and virtualization, and to kick-start product development as the company gains traction in stealth mode.
Founded by veteran technology professionals from Netezza and EqualLogic, CEO and Co-founder Ellen Rubin and Chief Technology Officer and Co-founder Lazarus Vekiarides, ClearSky Data seeks to solve infrastructure problems for companies struggling to maximize performance and efficiency of their IT infrastructures. Rubin previously co-founded CloudSwitch, a cloud migration company acquired by Verizon in 2011, and led global warehousing company Netezza to a successful IPO while serving as its vice president of marketing. She draws from expertise in data center technology, business intelligence and cloud computing. Vekiarides was an original team member and senior engineering manager at EqualLogic, which was acquired by Dell for $1.4 billion. At EqualLogic, and later as Dell’s executive director of software engineering, Vekiarides worked in storage management, disaster recovery, embedded software and Microsoft Windows integrations.
“Enterprises struggle from chronic infrastructure management problems,” said Ellen Rubin, CEO and co-founder of ClearSky Data. “We’re using our backgrounds in an exciting new way to help ease these issues and share new options for envisioning, building and managing infrastructure.”
Sean Dalton of Highland Capital and David Orfao from General Catalyst will join the ClearSky Data board of directors. Dalton, a general partner at Highland Capital, has extensive experience in guiding technology startups in mobile, enterprise and media. Orfao, the managing director for General Catalyst, concentrates on software and technology. Jit Saxena, co-founder and former CEO of Netezza, and Paula Long, CEO and co-founder of DataGravity, will also join the board.
