Today we announced that Polaris Partners has led our series B funding round, including a strategic investment from Akamai Technologies. This is a major milestone for ClearSky, since it signals that we have reached the next phase of the company’s development. We’re now out in the market, working with customers and a growing set of partners – all of whom expect our global storage network to deliver the benefits we promised in our recent launch.
So while we’re excited about the funding – it’s a great validation of the past two years of effort from our team – I’d prefer to focus less on what it means to us internally and more on what it suggests for our early customers and partners.
Let’s start with Polaris. Dave Barrett, managing partner at Polaris, will be joining ClearSky’s board of directors. Dave brings a wealth of experience in sales, go-to-market strategies and scaling successful companies. He’s an expert on SaaS and enterprise infrastructure, and his background will be a valuable addition to our board as we expand the company, add points of presence (PoPs), and build our team and culture. We’re thinking hard about the right priorities for long-term success since we know our customers are trusting us with one of their most important assets – their primary storage. Dave’s thinking about SaaS for primary storage will help guide how we deliver our service, especially in terms of ease of use and the ability to just “plug in.”
Akamai Technologies is a local company with a global brand and decades of experience delivering “edge” services to enterprise customers across a distributed network. Not only will Akamai’s experience help us learn quickly about best practices for conducting business on a global scale, but its partnership will enable us to understand the broader needs and goals of enterprise customers in the next generation of infrastructure. We hope to make better, faster decisions as a result. Andy Champagne, vice president at Akamai and chief technology officer at Akamai Labs, has been informally advising us on product strategy for the past year, and we look forward to adding his expertise on an ongoing basis as he joins us as a board observer.
With these partnerships in place and ongoing support from General Catalyst Partners, Highland Capital Partners and industry leaders Jit Saxena and Paula Long, we are ready for the next chapter of ClearSky’s growth. Of course, we’ll be adding new PoPs to expand our metro coverage and scaling our sales, marketing, operations and support teams. But more important, we’ll be laying the foundation for great customer relationships and deepening our understanding of how to help our customers succeed.
