Yesterday, ClearSky announced that we’re joining the Kinetic Edge Alliance (KEA), a cross-industry community founded by Vapor IO that makes it easy for enterprises to design, deploy and operate edge computing. ClearSky will work with other KEA partners to provide data layer capabilities that can enable services such as high-performance storage on demand, as well as backup and DR, for the most demanding workloads.
It’s yet another sign of how quickly the edge ecosystem is developing.
Edge computing is still a young industry, but it’s maturing much faster than the cloud did, in large part because business and political leaders already understand the pressing need that it meets. The opportunity is so enormous, and there’s no shortage of funds to build it out. Smart cities and self-driving cars can’t wait for a response to make split-second decisions where lives may be at stake. Likewise, CIOs won’t accept primary storage services that come with noticeable lag.

At ClearSky, our goal is nothing short of becoming the primary data provider for the enterprise. And to do this, we knew from the very beginning that we would need to build a service architecture that incorporated both the cloud and the edge to ensure that end users always have rapid access to the data they need. But we can’t accomplish our goal alone. Just as the cloud required an ecosystem, so does the edge, and we are passionate about fostering its growth.
For instance, in November, we announced a partnership with Equinix, a giant in the interconnection and data center world. We can leverage their more than 200 data centers around the globe to expand, and our customers can take advantage of Equinix’ direct connections to multiple clouds. In turn, Equinix can now the highest performance primary storage service to their own customer base.
Additionally, our partnership with Faction, a multi-cloud platform-as-a-service (PaaS) provider, enables us to replicate customer data to Faction’s VMware environment for disaster-recovery-as-a-service (DRaaS).

All of these partnerships (with more to come) create a mutually-beneficial edge ecosystem. ClearSky extends these metro edge providers’ reach all the way to the customer site, while their highly-connected facilities help us to expand our own service and augment our offerings.
The edge unlocks the full potential of the cloud. And as it matures, not only will it enable the kind of primary data services that we already offer, but other innovators will be able to apply intelligence to re-route city traffic patterns on the fly, safely manage fleets of autonomous cars and trucks, and gather immense amounts of data to learn more about the world than we could have previously imagined. We’ve barely scratched the surface of the possibilities.
Join us as we build the ecosystems and supporting technologies to transform these possibilities for edge and cloud into a reality.
