We considered offloading backup to the cloud, but while that took care of the extra capacity issue, it made the restore problem even worse due to the latency involved.
When we finally found ClearSky, we thought, “Hey, maybe we don’t need to back up data anymore.” The data is stored in multiple locations, creating more copies than we had before ClearSky, and recovery is so much faster.
Which benefits of ClearSky’s service were most appealing?
We have a great litigation department, and the amount of data that comes through a law firm like this is immense. Implementing ClearSky took away the headaches of a backup solution. We no longer have to babysit or manage backups of our documents today!
That was a huge thing to get rid of. With ClearSky, there is no need to watch the backup every single day to make sure that they succeed. It is verified that it’s written as soon as we write it, and it happens automatically in the background, so there’s no need to manage them manually. Not having to back up millions of files onto tape anymore is a great time savings. And when it comes to recovery, files are easy to find, and restore almost instantaneously.
We’ve saved more than 40% in data protection costs year-over-year with ClearSky, and that includes the $20,000 we were spending annually for backup storage alone, which was always growing larger. With ClearSky, we only pay for usable data. There’s no charge for backup storage at all.

When did you realize you could do more with ClearSky than data protection?
While we were searching for a new data protection solution, we were also experiencing dramatic data growth. We had to upgrade the capacity of our on-site NAS (network attached storage) solution regularly to keep up, then upgrade our backup and disaster recovery system, all while making sure all our data solutions fulfilled strict compliance and privacy requirements, including ISO requirements like multi-site backup.
ClearSky’s primary storage-as-a-service solution took care of these issues. We get primary storage at an off-site location with built-in backup and disaster recovery, so we no longer need separate processes to copy, replicate, store and recover data. And because it’s a fully-managed hybrid cloud service, we don’t have to own or maintain hardware to store that data. Finally it's elastic, so we can use whatever capacity we need and pay only for what they use.
How important are the security features of your ClearSky implementation?
For a law firm, security is extremely important. As I alluded to earlier, part of our ISO certification requires that we have multiple copies of our data in different locations. ClearSky stores copies of data on-prem, in the ClearSky PoP at the metro edge, and in different locations within AWS. Plus, ClearSky encrypts everything in transit and at rest, and we alone control the encryption keys. They also transmit everything over private line and not the public Internet, which further improves security, as well as performance.
What was the biggest pleasant surprise you found after selecting ClearSky?
Great support is No. 1 requirement with any technology solution. I need to be able to depend on somebody, and when I have questions, I need answers quickly. ClearSky’s support has been excellent all the way through.
