Cloud providers can address concerns about security, costs and control through technological advancements. But there’s no technology that can transmit data faster than the speed of light, which means latency is unavoidable with the public cloud. This is due to big public cloud providers building huge data centers in places where land and power are cheap, usually hundreds or thousands of miles away from customers’ locations. For storing massive volumes of archival data at low cost, the economies of scale are fantastic. But for today’s business applications, where users expect real-time response and data is being generated at many endpoints, the delays and unpredictability of the public cloud can make it hard to use for more active and performance-sensitive workloads.
Solving the “speed of light” problem
There are solutions to this problem, but they’re not all feasible, such as one high-cost example found in Michael Lewis’ Flash Boys. A financial services exchange built a direct, 827-mile cable through mountains and under rivers from Chicago to New Jersey to reduce latency from 17 to 13 milliseconds for their trades to create a competitive edge. Most enterprises wouldn’t dream of going to these extremes (and don’t have the money to do so even if they wanted to), but still need low latency for their business application workloads. Besides, latency of even 13 milliseconds is still too high for many users and applications.
Thankfully, the rise of the edge is overcoming the cloud’s inherent latency problem. At the edge, applications and data are close to the end user, which provides the performance that the cloud lacks, enabling organizations to finally realize the cloud’s full promise.
Here at ClearSky, we’re leveraging both the edge and the cloud to power a service that enables IT to stop managing on-prem storage systems, babysitting backups, replicating data to other locations and maintaining an offsite disaster recovery facility. With ClearSky, enterprise IT can finally achieve infrastructure independence, so they’ll never have to buy storage or data protection systems ever again.
