It’s been a busy month at ClearSky. Since our launch and our time at VMworld, we’ve been working with enterprises to find out how our global storage network can help simplify primary storage, backup and DR; launch hybrid cloud strategies; and eliminate many of the pain points companies have been struggling with for years. During these conversations, we’ve noticed a few common themes. For example, we’ve learned that too many storage developers and IT teams currently lack insight into how much of their data actually requires the performance of flash storage.
If you’re using a traditional enterprise storage system, there’s probably a vast difference between the amount of your data that’s actually hot and the amount you’re keeping on your hottest tier. Too often, enterprises lack the storage monitoring tools needed to gain insights based on hard evidence in their data. As a result, these companies have a limited understanding of their individual workloads, and when they invest in the market’s fastest, most expensive storage options to increase performance, they waste resources and money without seeing the results they want.
During today’s Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) Storage Developer Conference in Santa Clara, California, I’ll take the stage at 9:45 a.m. PT for a keynote session. My presentation, titled “Why the storage you have is not the storage your data needs,” will share some of the many insights we have acquired about storage workloads in our journey to deliver our global storage network. This is a glimpse into the data supporting our main thesis: there is a better way to have a high-performance storage environment while maintaining a low total cost of ownership (TCO). SNIA events consistently draw an informed, knowledgeable crowd of storage decision-makers and innovators ready to discuss the industry’s problems, theories and solutions from a hands-on perspective, so I expect a lot of insightful conversations.
During my presentation, I’ll be asking some of the questions every storage architect should consider about his environment, which include:
- Is your most expensive data on your most expensive storage?
- Why cant conventional cloud tiering strategies work in the datacenter?
- What real-world benefits can be derived from virtualized caching technology? Where does it fail?
If you’re attending the show or following along on social media, be sure to tune in and learn the answers to these questions, plus additional ideas to help build a winning storage strategy at your organization.
