When we recently asked 500 IT leaders what topped their list of IT infrastructure innovation goals, better backup and disaster recovery (DR) came up again and again. But knowing you need to stop the madness in your backup and DR processes and seeing the best way to do that are two different things. Which promises of better, faster and simpler data protection are valid?
This was the subject of our recent webinar, “Stop the backup and DR madness: ClearSky, Cohesity, Rubrik, Veeam compared.” The one-hour webcast is now available on-demand. In it, we take a closer look at each of these companies and their approach to backup and data protection. We also explore the technology evolution from siloed primary storage to today’s hybrid approaches.
Hybrid architectures present both an opportunity and a challenge - adding the benefits of elastic scale but also offering complexity to the enterprise, with limited reliability across silos, unpredictable backup times for recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO) and unpredictable egress fees. How does an organization prioritize data protection and take advantage of the opportunity the cloud presents?
It can be helpful to compare the architectures and capabilities of competing solutions to these problems, which we do in this webinar.
We also argue that IT leaders should ask questions that upend the status quo, like, “What if you stopped doing backup and DR all together?” And, “What if you got out of your secondary data center completely?” Or, “What if you never made or paid for another copy of your data again?”
Turning those what-ifs into attainable realities starts with asking a few other questions as you weigh competing options for backup and DR, including:
- What can I consolidate and eliminate with this solution?
- How complex is migration to this solution?
- How simple is the solution to use?
- Can this solution get my organization back up and running on demand?
- Will data access be predictable?
- With the solution integrate with the cloud?
- Will this solution reduce my storage costs?
It’s absolutely reasonable to expect an easier backup and DR experience, and you shouldn’t have to make individual decisions for primary storage… and then for backup… and then for the cloud.
At ClearSky, we approach this challenge differently, with an architected service that allows you to keep a single copy of your data. You point to our service like you would any storage environment, with all data written to a metro-based point of presence (PoP) and then to the public cloud - all protected, all encrypted, no egress, no replication.
