Unstructured data is the fastest growing segment of the enterprise information explosion, and it’s not just the amount of data that’s growing. For example, in medical imaging, as scans move from two-dimensional to three-dimensional, the size of each image increases by a factor of ten. This exponential growth is seriously straining the ability of enterprise IT to protect data in a traditional NAS.
ClearSky will host a Webinar on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 1:00 p.m. ET to examine and address the difficulty IT faces in storing and protecting NAS data, but let’s go ahead and dive into the issues a bit here.
Simply storing this ever-increasing amount of data presents an enormous challenge for traditional on-prem systems. With data roughly doubling every two years, enterprises either need to purchase two to three times more capacity than they immediately need, or constantly buy and deploy new boxes. And all that data usually isn’t concentrated in a single data center, but is instead spread out over multiple locations and even multiple clouds. It’s an operational nightmare ensuring all this far-flung data is protected.
It’s also expensive. According to a report from Spiceworks, IT spends about 8 percent — nearly one of every 10 dollars — of their entire software budget on backup systems. What’s more, most organizations are struggling to back up frequently enough, typically measuring their RPOs (recovery point objectives) in hours, which leaves a lot of data exposed to loss. Enterprise IT would love to back up every few minutes during the day, but with most on-prem systems, this would slow the production environment to a crawl.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
ClearSky Data has built data protection into its primary storage service so that backup takes place automatically, with RPOs and RTOs (recovery time objectives) that are near zero — all while cutting the total cost of ownership for storage in half.
