Architectural Deep Dive Global Storage Network

How Dedicated Storage Networks Keep Pace with Machine Data Growth

Posted by Neil Glazebrook on 10/3/16 11:00 AM

I first heard the phrase “you can’t manage what you don’t measure” in the early ‘90s, when I joined the data networking industry. The phrase was used to help justify the need for our recently launched ethernet network management solution.

Stop Measuring Storage Costs in Terms of $/GB

Posted by Neil Glazebrook on 8/30/16 9:00 AM

If you’ve managed storage, you know that measuring costs in dollars per gigabyte ($/GB) only covers half of the equation. You need to consider additional cost drivers and dispel common myths about storage TCO (total cost of ownership) to make fully educated decisions and ensure ROI for your team.

The Evolution of Edge Computing

Posted by Laz Vekiarides on 7/21/16 1:00 PM

We have been talking about the notion of edge services, or more recently, edge computing, for quite some time. When Ellen and I were conceptualizing what the next generation of infrastructure might look like, we kept revisiting network concepts – users are on one end of a powerful network, and compute and data can flow seamlessly from the cloud to locations proximal to users.

Why the Industry Needs a New Storage Approach for Machine Data

Posted by Ellen Rubin on 7/8/16 11:00 AM

When we started ClearSky a couple of years ago, it seemed to the early team that we were focused on a particular set of challenges created by the growing adoption of cloud and hybrid cloud architectures: what to do about primary storage? We built a storage network that combines high performance and low latency with the ease of use, agility and scale of the cloud. In the early beta days, we focused on workloads that customers would trust us with: VMware, SQL and other back-office apps that were appropriately low-risk for a pre-GA service.

How to Match your Storage to Splunk’s Analytics, Agility and Simplicity

Posted by Courtney Pallotta on 5/11/16 12:51 PM

As people, we tend to make things harder than they need to be. This is surprising, considering how much innovation is happening every day to make many aspects of our personal and professional lives better. But, the reality is, embracing changes that simplify our lives can be hard.

It Turns Out the Internet and the Subway Have a Lot in Common

Posted by Laz Vekiarides on 4/8/16 9:00 AM

Perhaps it's unconventional thinking or perhaps it’s just that I am getting old and cantankerous, but there are some parts of the digital economy that do not wear well on me. In particular, the great granddaddy of all things shared - the internet – continues to come up regularly when I discuss the ClearSky architecture. We here at ClearSky Data have taken an unconventional and necessary view of network connectivity. Simply put, we leverage private transport networks for data. This approach still occasionally raises questions, and it’s not unexpected as public IP transit is the way the majority of people have connected for two decades.

New York and D.C. – Now Open for Business

Posted by Ellen Rubin on 4/4/16 9:10 AM

The traditional model for data storage is failing, and transforming to a hybrid cloud model is now at the top of CIO agendas. But, bringing primary data to the cloud is almost impossible for many large enterprises. Customers and partners constantly tell us they need a smarter way than buying new boxes to scale enterprise storage. Enterprises want to apply the economics and flexibility of the cloud to every workload, and to pursue data center transformation.

Choose How to Access Your Data Instead of Managing Your Storage

Posted by Marc Keating on 2/10/16 1:06 PM

When I worked with my first SAN, it was the late nineties and I was leading a storage QA team at Digital.   Most servers at that time had hard disks directly attached, either internally or externally via parallel SCSI cables.  My team got a FC-AL based array to test.

Solving the Data Mobility Problem at Long Last

Posted by Ellen Rubin on 1/18/16 9:00 AM

Some technology challenges loom large for a period of time, and then get resolved and fade away. Internet access, for example, and mobile payments. Other problems hang around for years, sometimes even longer. The one that has irked me in my own career for over five years now is data mobility.

Riding the Storage Performance Curve

Posted by Neil Glazebrook on 1/4/16 1:30 PM

Last weekend I enjoyed what surely has to be the final ride of the season. The weather was a balmy 65 degrees, and in the past 25 years of being an avid motorcyclist, I cannot remember getting out so late in the year. My buddy and I had a blast carving up the empty roads of western Massachusetts and enjoying the scenery.
